An Interview with Josh
What were you feeling just before the accident?
I was on top of the world, I’d finished my VCE (somehow), moved to Mt Buller to be with my friends and snowboard everyday………… I’d been saving for a few months so I had money to be able to enjoy myself.
Did you have any question in your mind that you would not make the jump?
No not at all, I always believed I would make it across the road, but at the worst I thought I’d come short a little bit, but on my feet, never upside down, that has never happened to me … I’ve hit hundreds of different jumps over the years.
What were you thinking when you were flying through the air upside down?
I was trying to figure out the best way to get out of it, even though I was in the air for only a few seconds, it felt like I was there for ages, so I was trying to get my feet back underneath me so at least if I landed on my legs at the worst, I’d break a leg which in my case was looking like the best option when I was upside down…

Hello Jenny,
Thank you for your email. It is our pleasure to help you and Ben in any way we can. It is so very tough for you as a parent seeing your son Ben go through such a challenge. As I mentioned neither Josh or I researched any web sites for information on spinal cord injuries. There is nothing wrong with doing research, but we felt at the time and still do, we did not want anything we read influencing us in any way.
Josh often says a spinal cord injury is the loneliest injury you can have with no one injury being identical.
It is all not bad news, through Josh and the help of our dedicated team, we have achieved amazing results for Josh. Over the years Josh, myself and our team have developed significant intellectual property in dealing with this debilitating injury and of course we are more than happy to share it.
Josh was always focussed on walking and would do whatever it took to achieve his goal.. Fortunately, we didn’t find out he had only 5% spinal cord function at the injury until a few years ago; I think if we knew that in the beginning, we may not have been so positive…Fortunately we will never know! I have sent information relating to our other team to your personal email to protect the identities… Please keep positive, Ben as an athlete understands the importance of training and fitness this will assist him in dealing with the rehabilitation ahead. He sounds like a very strong well adjusted young man, all this is so important.
